Sálon Latino: Presence & Other Poems of José Emilio Pacheco, feat. Tomás Lozano

Auer Hall

Presence and other poems of José Emilio Pacheco / Presencia y otros poemas de José Emilio Pacheco

Come to experience one of the major Mexican poets of the second half of the 20th century. The Berlin International Literature Festival has praised him as "one of the most significant contemporary Latin American poets". In 2009 he was awarded the Cervantes Prize for his literary work. Spanish musician, singer and composer, Tomás Lozano, has selected a handful of poems spanning different stages of the poetic trajectory of José Emilio Pacheco's extensive work in order to set them to music and transform them into song. Now Tomás Lozano shares Pacheco's poetry with the world by singing his poems. As an introduction to each song, the declaimer, Rima Montoya, reads aloud her English rendition of each poem.

A 12 minute documentary about Pacheco’s life and literary work will be shown prior to the recital.

The Cervantes Institute of Chicago commissioned Tomás Lozano at the end of 2021 to compose a musical program based on the poetry of José Emilio Pacheco for the inauguration of the library that bears his name and which opened on May 10, 2022. So this Spanish musician, singer and composer focused on selecting a handful of poems spanning different stages of the poetic trajectory of the Mexican poet and writer's extensive work in order to set them to music and transform the poem into song.

On May 10, 2022, part of the poetic musical repertoire premiered as part of the inaugural events of the José Emilio Pacheco Library. The declaimer, Rima Montoya, read aloud each poem translated into English by herself, before Tomás Lozano sang them in their original language.

This performance will be livestreamed via IUMusicLive.

Guest Performers

Ozan Cemali (baglama) is from Turkey. He has been playing Baglama (Turkish long-necked lute, a traditional instrument) since the age of 10. Nurtured by the love of music that comes from the roots of his family, Ozan Cemali has been singing, performing and improvising in various cultural settings from traditional coffee houses, ( a significant component of becoming troubadour in Turkey), to contemporary musical venues. At the age of seventeen he widened his musical repertoire to include the Oud. In addition to his skills in interpreting the corpus of traditional songs, he also has a growing songbook of his own compositions.

Born and raised in Lima, Peru to a Peruvian father and American mother, Daniel Cueto´s (flute) musical output is reflective of his broad cultural experiences within European, North American and South American music. His compositions have been performed in twenty-one countries, and his experience as a performer ranges across a wide variety of styles including orchestral, chamber, traditional Peruvian music and many other genres.

Julia Shannon Driscoll (violin) is a West-Texan turned mid-Westerner violinist, with experience in tango and classical music. Julia is a founding member of the Bloomington-based tango band Tamango, where she first began performing with Tomas Lozano. Julia holds a Masters in Arts Administration from Indiana University and a Bachelors in Music Performance from Texas Tech University, where she first began playing tango with the band Double T Tango (now known as Tangos Llaneros). When she isn’t playing tango, Julia works at Indiana University as the Assistant Director of Arts Administration Programs, supporting students studying arts administration and management. Her technical training in classical violin combined with the emotion and free-flow of tango lets her better connect music with a broad audience – those who love to listen, to dance, or to experience new mediums of art and music.
