Frequently hailed as Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov’s masterpiece, Ainadamar stands out as one of the few twenty-first-century operas to enjoy continuous and numerous performances worldwide since its premiere in 2003. Part of the work's success owes to the novelty of this work, which fuses operatic, flamenco, and Latin American musical traditions. In this talk, musicologist Christine Wisch explores how Golijov brings these different musical worlds together to create a powerful score whose stylistic fusion mirrors the blurring of onstage boundaries and also reflects his own hallmark eclecticism as a composer.   Presented by the Latin American Music Center, co-sponsored by Latino Studies & IU Opera Theater.
