IU’s Latin American Ensemble, directed by Dr. Joe Galvin, performs their fall concert on Saturday, December 2nd at 8pm in MC070, free and open to the public. The Latin American Ensemble features three chamber ensembles, each playing a short set for the concert:
- The Afro-Cuban Folkloric Ensemble plays traditional percussion and vocal sacred music from the Lucumí and Arará Savalú communities in Matanzas, Cuba. This semester, ACFE will play a suite dedicated to the archetypical hunter deity, Ochosi/Agé.
- The popular music ensemble Orquesta Escuela Vieja consists of strings, winds, percussion, and voices performing popular Cuban dance styles, including classic salsa and charanga favorites.
- The IU Historic Steel Pan Ensemble, a 9-piece “panband” playing high energy Trinidadian pan music, will feature a medley of the older, parade-style of steel pan music known as single-pan or “pan round de neck.”
All three groups are sure to get you out of your chair and moving so make sure to bring your dancing shoes!
