Consuelo Jerí, voice & Coco Vega, guitar
Consuelo Jerí is a singer of Kechwa origin. Jerí performs the traditional music of her hometown, Ayacucho, and strives to convey the feeling of the peasant soul and popular tradition. Her repertoire revalues anonymous Kechwa poetry and is built in perfect communion with the mestizo guitar that evokes the sounds of the harp and violin, using ancient traditional tunings from the Peruvian Andes. She has toured and performed in different venues across Europe and Latin America for more than a decade. One of her first appearances in the music scene occurred with the documentary Kachkaniraqmi, sigo siendo (2013) by Peruvian filmmaker Javier Corcuera, a film that won dozens of international awards, such as the Goya Award in 2014. Jerí has also participated in several traditional music and world music festivals, including the San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain, the Sonamos Latinoamérica in Belgium, and the Raíces Bogotá Andina Festival in Colombia. She was part of Susana Baca’s recent recording Epifanías, nominated for the 2023 Grammy in the Best Global Music Album category. To date, Jerí has four recordings to her name. Her debut album, Ukumanta Takiy (“Inner Song”), released in 2010, features songs in Quechua and Spanish. In 2012, she released the live album Kuychi and in 2017 the album Mayu with the guitarist Marino Martínez. Her most recent album, Zumbayllu, featuring Marino Martínez (guitar) and Ricardo Garcia (charango), was released in March of this year.
Coco Vega is a concert artist, arranger, and composer for the guitar as well as an avid researcher of the history of Peruvian guitar music. Born in Piura, Peru, Vega discovered his love for the guitar and started his musical education at age nine, inspired by his father. His efforts quickly earned him the attention of his teachers who became enthusiastic mentors of his musical development. He furthered his academic development thanks to a full scholarship granted by the National University of Music of Peru, where he deepened his knowledge and skills of the classical guitar under the mentorship of such renowned artists as Ricardo Barreda and Oscar Zamora. By age 18, he was a fully developed soloist and was invited to perform Rodrigos’s Concierto de Aranjuez with the National Symphony Orchestra of Peru under the direction of Jose Carlos Santos. Vega was a member of the Aranjuez Guitar Quartet, with which he toured through Europe and North America and participated in four recordings. He has remained in touch with his roots in northern Peru, leading to his development as a Peruvian popular music guitarist and garnering wide recognition. In that capacity, he performs not only in his own concerts but also accompanying such popular artists as Susana Baca, Juan Diego Flórez, Eva Ayllón, and Araceli Poma, among others. Vega has gained international recognition for his contribution to the dissemination of music from his country through virtuoso performances and master classes in venues including Concierto Bank Austria Salon (Viena, Austria), School of Music (Dusseldorf, Germany), International Guitar Festival (Panama), Auditorio de Guitarras de Luthier (Madrid, Spain), National Conservatory of Music (Mexico City), and many others. To date, Coco has published a sheet music collection and released five solo recordings, featuring a gamut of popular songs and melodies from Latin America.
