IU’s Latin American Ensemble, directed by Dr. Joe Galvin, performs their fall concert on Saturday, December 3rd at 8pm in MC066, free and open to the public. LAE consists of three chamber ensembles, each playing a short set for the concert:
- The Afro-Cuban Folkloric Ensemble plays traditional percussion and vocal sacred music from the Arará Savalú communities in Matanzas, Cuba. This semester ACFE will play a suite dedicated to the Arará owners thunder, lightning, and the volcano - deities known as Sogbó and Ebioso.
- The popular music ensemble Orquesta Escuela Vieja consists of strings, winds, percussion and vocals, performing popular Cuban dance styles. Playing classic salsa favorites such as Tito Puente's Ran Kan Kan, Cal Tjader's Mamblues, and many more.
- Finally, the IU Advanced Steelpan Ensemble is a 17-piece “panband” playing high energy Trinidadian panorama music. This fall they will feature a medley of the older traditional parade style of steelpan music known as single-pan or "pan round de neck."
All three groups are sure to get you out of your chair and moving, so make sure to bring your dancing shoes!
